Contracts

A contract is a voluntary agreement between two or more bodies entitling them to seek remedy through the courts if the contract is breached. What remedies are available, which agreements will be enforced and under what conditions will depend on the legal system in question.

Tort

A tort is a wrong arising out of neglect towards others resulting in damage to them and leads to a claim for loss or damage suffered. Such a claim is not intended to punish but only to compensate the injured party.

Divorce, adoption Guardianship.

Trusts

Trusts arise when a body holds property for the benefit of another body. The trustees own the property but the beneficiaries get the benefits from it.

Rights in property and just transfer of property.

Administrative

Determines how government organisations function.

Criminal

State control over individuals, certain forms of conduct will attract punishment from the state. A crime is a public offence against the state. The punishment is not intended to compensate the victim! A prosecutor prosecutes a defendant.

Civil Law

Civil law is all non-criminal law. A plaintiff sues (brings an action against) a defendant. The defendant may be required to pay money, transfer property or to do or not do something (an injunction) or to perform a contract (specific performance). Some of these remedies are legal and others equitable [TODO What does equitable mean]
